Always felt a bit strange being a Scotsman who doesn't drink Whisky...

Can anyone recommend a nice "novice friendly" whisky? Perhaps the SV650 of the Whisky world...

Well a lot of people who dont like whisky, or only think it is ok LOVED the Strath Isla.

So, get a bottle of it (its only £100/bottle) and if it doesn't work out, you can send me the rest of the bottle.

If it does work out, you can get me a bottle as a thank you

Best bet in honesty is to arrange to go ona tasting at a fellow orgers place that DOES like whisky and try a few - the taste can vary wildly, so you WILL have to try a few to get one you like.

I love the stuff but it doesn't love me. It is an acquired taste but over the years you learn the differences just as you would with wines. Propriety brands such as Grouse,Bells are nothing like an aged single malt and few pubs have the real McCoy.
You may find some that do 12 year old malts but they are session whisky and more refined
than the propriety optic brands but will give you a taster between blended and single malt
Try a distillery tour and sample some of the good stuff would be my suggestion

P.S It can become an expensive acquired taste

There are a few bottles around, very few of the original ones, some gordon and macphails and other barrel buyers about. stumbled across a 21 a few weeks ago. unfortunately the 12s are now going for 50 - 60 whereas 5 or 6 years ago they were 25 - 30.

Yeh, at a £100 a bottle it does seem a bit of a gamble!
Will stick to bumming samples from friends houses!
