Default Norton NRV588

Can anyone tell me what the "rubber pipework" is that attaches to the exhaust system? Always been confused since i was a wee nipper, as its an exhaust, and surley hot exhaust gasses would melt rubber?

Some sort of vaccum pipe??? But then its nearly as large as the exhaust itself?

But then a few seasons before/after, the pipework had totally changed to the bottom, and also made in the same material as the rest of the exhaust.

Anyone know what they are for?

Isn't it to do with engine cooling??
Air is drawn through the MIDDLE! of the engine using the same venturi effect as a curvy carb.

That one is metal too, just had the rubber hose sleeve because of the riders foot positioning.

Cool.

It would work drawing air through like that, stream of exiting exhaust will have a low pressure area in front of it if pipework is designed how it appears at first glance. Could be something else entirely like....
