Fork swap axle and ride height

Hi all,

I'm almost finished with my fork swap. Got some forks from a GSXR750 k3 for cheap, and am planning to swap them for K3 GSXR1000 in the winter.

Brakes from an SV1000, axle, and discs from a K3 also. K4 Wheel.

I'm having a little trouble with the axle, when I go to torque it up, the wheel doesn't sit centrally and doesn't sit flush with the forks as it should. Any ideas on what it could be?

Also since fitting the forks and a GSXR 1000 K4 rear shock, the ride height seems A LOT lower despite using a 120/70 tyre, I'm wondering whether 'm going to have problems with the centre stand?

Front end:
lightly grease the whole axle.

axle sleeve nut.. once the wheel is loosely installed this must be pushed up flush to the fork knuckle then 'nip' up the outer pinch bolt

tighten the axle to half recommended torque

tighten to around 2/3 the inner pinch bolt on the sleeve nut

fully torque up the axle

bounce the front end as hard as you can. this is important as it sets the forks straight

tighten all four of the pinch bolts.

rear shock:
have you set the ride height via the spring pre load?

Its all on a K4 650!

Haven't had a chance to look at this yet as I've been trying to sort out new throttle cables, shall let you know how I get on 👍

I feel as though I have been conned. The guy I bought the wheel from told me it was a wheel from a K4, but that axle will not fit. The bearings are the right size but the axle seems 5-10mm too long. The only conclusion is that the wheel is from an SRAD. Is there any possible way to get this to work? As I can't sink any more funds into this project

identifying an srad and later wheel. the srad wheel looks like the sv one in that the spokes are round, the later wheel are commonly called diamond spoke due to the spokes having a ridge in the centre with flat surfaces tapering down. you need the diamond spoke wheel.

sell the wheel you have and get the correct one.

have a spacer made up for the sleeve nut. even at that the discs wont be sitting in the mouths of the callipers properly.

word of warning about buying wheels on ebay, most of them are feked. read the item description carefully and look at the picture of the wheel type. good condition wheels are higher priced, the cheep ones will have something wrong with them.

This, with the correct wheel, is the axle and spacer you need.

(03-04 1000 or 04-05 600/750) uses an axle & collar nut (same as SV1K actually)
Note that there is no additional wheel/axle spacer required



(05+ 1000 or 06+ 600/750)
the axle has a threaded bolt, rather than a collar nut, with a separate spacer that goes between wheel & right fork leg.

On the topic of being ripped off...did you buy the bits on Ebay? If so, get a complaint put in and get a refund for the equivalent value of the wheel.

Shame your so far away, always easier to fix these things looking at them. Sure it will just be a spacer issue.
