Fuel light

Hi folks,

Not sure if this is something I can fix myself but thought I'd ask your opinions.

2001 SV650S...When you turn the ignition key on ALL lights function correctly.

When the fuel level is down low the low fuel warning light should come on....
IT DIDN'T and obviously my bike crapped out!

Is the sender hooped? (the light does work)
Is it easy to replace?

Any advice is welcomed

BUMP...................as this happened to me

IIRC, it's a tank drained & off jobby. After that farce is over with, a simple unscrew old & screw in the new. Wire it up.

Could be wrong like, wouldn't be the first time, won't be the last

Is there any way of double checking it is definately the sender?
Can I jump the connector and see if the light works?
It wouldn't be the float assembly would it?!? (hope not)

The tank sender unit is all one piece (it has two senders, one for flashing and one for constant light), three wires feed the unit in the bottom of the tank, these wires can become crushed or the connector dislodged when the tank is raised and then lowered, it's worth check them before draining and removing the unit.

Short of loose wires or loose connector...

If you take the connector (between the tank and the main wiring harness) off and jumper 2 wires(I forget which but the middle to one of the outer pins.. it is in the service manual), it will flash, then take the jumper off, the light should stop flashing in less than 30 seconds or so.... then if you jumper all three the light will go solid... take the jumper off and the light should go out within 30 seconds..

That will show if the wiring and light is working to the dash... if you run dry again the problem is the fuel level sender inside the tank.

Short the colours to earth (the black and white wire), one gives flashing the other gives solid.
If this check works ok then its the sender, if not then theres something gone amiss in the loom.

Also use your trip meter! It makes a pretty decent fuel gauge
