There was a fad of swapping out the flux capacitor for the one off the gixxer 1000, but they blow & can cause the symptoms you describe.

Was the noise a 'one off' event or did it continue for the rest of the ride in any form ? Does the bike start OK and rev OK when not in gear ? Had you noticed any unusual noise before the very loud noise or did it just happen out of the blue. Need to narrow it down a bit ........... ( was it the cam chain area or the rear drive chain area ).
