Fitted Avon Storms a few months ago local tyre place had a pair for £152 + £12 each for fitting, and really happy with them, if they last me that long I will be even happier

I can believe that, last ones I changed more for age than miles - it had done at least 10k

RE. slime etc I'm only interested in the claims they can prevent a blowout...but not sure how substantiated they are. I'd have more faith in an inside-out plug as a permanent repair.
Tyre fitters will charge more labour on a slimed wheel, as well as paying for the product itself.

Most of the slimes will only plug a smallish hole, if the hole / gash is large enough to catastrophically deflate tyre ( blowout ) then the slime will just get blown out. That is the problem with the slime kits they supply with modern cars instead of a spare wheel, any decent hole and they are useless ( as is the tyre sometimes after you have used them ). With slime you may be riding around with a hole in the tyre you don't even know is there... Mushroom plug is most secure solution... unlike slime which is a 'solution'...

Just got a confirmation from a tyre specialist that says a mushroom is the way to go as the nail in it is quite small. So... fingers crossed it should be a relatively inexpensive and quick fix.

Well, managed to get one of those vulcanised patches fitted, supposed to last the life of the tyre so pretty happy really. And all for just £20 as opposed to £85+ for a new tyre.

They recommend mushroom plugs on cars because with a patch only on the inside of tyre water can get in through original hole and corrode the steel braids - I have absolutely no idea if motorbike tyres have steel braids under the tread ?

The Metzeler Roadtech tyres I had on the SV a few years back had steel braids. It made it almost impossible to use one of those externally inserted mushroom plugs as a temporary puncture repair, as they just squeezed back out or right inside the tyre. Sticky string repair worked ok though.

Just a reminder:
" 1973 worked for Goodyear as F1 tyre fitter
To combat punctures they brought in McLoTy to solve these.
1) test with Ronnie Peterson at Silverstone: Engineer would puncture a tyre with a screwdriver and RP would drive 'at speed' and report back.
Never seen anyone go completely white as said engineer when he thought RP was only doing a 'warm up' lap and there was no McLoTy applied.
We could hear the Lotus engine screaming, together with the 'machine gun' fusillade of tyre vibration sounds.
Result: nothing, RP was well aware of the problem and drove like that to teach engineer a lesson.
2) Trying it in anger. Apply McLoTy to wet tyres and mount on rims.
Cars do warm up lap and form grid.
Go! or not, because the gunge had warmed up and sunk to the bottom of the tyre, giving monumental out of balance. The wheels just bounced up and down!
That was the last we heard of of it.
