Default Does my bike have a custom airbox?

Bought a new K&N air filter about a month ago as I was buying new bits for my bike at the time. I only got around to lifting the tank yesterday evening and as I opened up the airbox I found that there was no air filter. I then looked at the lid of the airbox and I found that there's a filter behind some mesh that has been riveted into place.

https://imgur.com/a/RYAOx - Couldn't upload any images for some reason despite them being less than 125kb and jpg/png files.

Exactly where did you find that thing?

Nothing custom there.
That's a standard airbox but the filter is stuck in the recess. At least you know there was a good seal seal nothing would have got passed it. It will fall or with a prod or you can help it out with a gentle wiggle of a screwdriver where it says in the groove.
Be gentle and don't damage the airbox.

Ah yes, just saw a picture of what looks like the oem one online. It's that metal mesh that threw me off as I hadn't seen anything like it before when changing air filters on other bikes. Seeing a naked air box reminded me of my friend's 230hp IOMTT engine. Thanks

The metal mesh stops the paper / fibre element getting sucked into the throttle bodies if the paper / fibre starts to break up, and helps make the structure more rigid.

Have a look out for an SV1000 intake snorkel, they still crop up on eBay from time to time. They're a straight swap for the 650 snorkel (airbox is otherwise identical). Makes a lovely snarl that isn't offensive.
