Default Can a battery be intermitantly dodgy?

Usually starts on the button, have had very occassional no turn-over but will bump straght away.
Went out this morning, no turn, was fine last night, tried to short the solinoid, but still nothing.
Bumped it straight away.
To work, charged battery ( only took 1/2 hour to full) home tonight no probs.
Is it possible for a cell to be playing up one minuite then OK the next, hence only occassionally having problems???
Don't want to shell-out for new battery if it is not this.

sounds like its just not holding charge. Whether is has enough charge to start the bike, can depend on things like temperature, how long since it was last charged, etc. If its not the old rectifier problem, its most likely the battery. I think if you shop around, you can get them for £30-40.

OK, but if it ain't holding charge as you say, why will it start perfect for weeks, then nothing this morning? I know I am no tech, but that just ain;t logical Mr, Spoke ( or is it?)

Mine did this from new mate, called the guy i bought it from and explained it all to him.

he asked if i ever took it off the bike to charge it to make sure it wasn't bad wring loosing the power somewhere and when i said "yes tried that too" he simply said..... sounds like you got a duff one there mate, i'm very sorry about that and sent me a new one in the post right away.

very good of him cos it was bought online and he could easily have washed his hands of it and left me to buy another one, so i guess its not unheard of.

Jump starts 1st try, very easy.
Had did the tests from the haynes manual, rate with engine running was fine.

Is it still the battery the bike came with? If so, you've done well to get to now before it started playing up
