I wonder if that consideration has ever crossed Nicola Sturgeon's mind? (Scotland/England and Scotland/Ireland borders required to support independence might have practical consequences too?! Tbh, I've always found the independence proposition quite ironic - complain at being led out of one union then actively campaign to do the same in another )

I think it's all ideology & values driven, with outcomes always subject to a large dose of luck. Our expectations of politicians are too high - no-one can predict the future. However the apparent lack of willingness to collaborate in politics and inability to collectively serve up consensus about the best for the whole country(/countries) is, for me, the key sign that our 'system' needs overhaul.

I agree except when it comes to homes - I suggest the housing options and costs were generally better (or at least more proportionate) in the 70s

nuisance alarms from smoke detectors. continuous false alarm from mains operated interconnected smoke alarms in my house. removed both alarms and wiped clean and used vacuum cleaner to suck out any debris. reinstalled and still sounded false alarms. removed just the first floor landing alarm leaving the ground floor hall connected and false alarm stopped. must be something to do with landing alarm. need electrician if it starts nuisance alarm when connected again. wondered if it was to do with hot weather and humidity ! not ideal but left it off for now.
any suggestions ?

it's getting an electrician to install or fix them that is the problem, unless I just make a claim on my british gas cover for electrical if they still sound when I reconnect the landing detector.

Housing. Really am losing the will to continue with anything at all now. Don't know how long I've spent on the phone to the council listening to this hideous piece of musak, waiting for my call to be answered. They are seriously understaffed as far as the people who matter, and who do the proper work, are concerned.

It's just sucking all the joy out of life for me. After 20 months of it, I'm just about out of resources mentally.
