Wild Speedometer
Hi All,
I've got a naked '99, and my speedo's started misbehaving. It jumps around all over the place, on the motorway it's bouncing anywhere above 120, and often way past 150. I can sit at traffic lights, and its bouncing up to 100, and the milometer is counting. What's most likely to be the problem, and where do I start looking? Thanks. |

Re: Wild Speedometer
First thing I would do is check all electrical connections for corrosion and clean with a combination of Switch cleaner and then ACF50.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ACF-50-Mot...IAAOSwdjNZCEQT There are several colour wiring diagrams around to help trace the connectors, https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=sv...nNE6_VXtmhrbAM and pdf workshop manuals, http://www.svrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78213 Also check that Battery connections are free from corrosion and secure. Re: Wild Speedometer
If it wasn't bouncing around at a standstill I would have said it's the rotor disintegrating, but at a standstill?
Obviously electrical, so start checking all the connector blocks in the loom, clean the terminals and treat with ACF50 Check the battery terminals are tight Check the loom under the seat Check the wheel rotor hasn't disintegrated.

Re: Wild Speedometer
Hi All,
There's only one connector between the sensor and the instrument cluster, it's in the headlight, it looks fine and I cleaned it anyway. The battery connectors are both tight. There are three connections to the sensor 0V (good connection to the rest of 0V), power (4.7V), and signal from the sensor. I ran jumper cables across the connector halves. According to the haynes manual, the signal should switch between 0V & power as the front wheel rotates. However, with the signal line connected, it sits at a constant ~2V, with the signal line separated, the sensor sits permanently at 0V. Is the sensor dead? Thanks. |
