Gearing change...now my bike is a whiner
So yesterday I dropped a tooth in the front and now there is a slight whine when I roll on the throttle. It was faint enough with my visor down that I thought it was wind noise at first. Anyway, it doesn't make the noise when I pull the clutch in. I was thinking it might be the gears now that they spin a bit faster. Any ideas? Stock pitch at 525.

It may have been there all along, but you just didn't notice. My friends SV always whined through the transmission. He never had any bother with it. it might be that the chain is too tight or that it just has to go round a tighter radius now???

By reducing the diameter of the front sprocket you will have made the chain tighter at that point which, if the chain is worn, could be causing the whine.

Also could be that if you have changed the sprocket for an aftermarket one, a lot of them don't have the rubber silencing/dampening ring that the standard ones have. When I changed my front sprocket for one without the rubber ring, it did whine a bit. It's just a characteristic that happens with plain metal front sprockets.

Thanks guys for all your input! I left the old sprocket at my bud's house and I'll try to get it back soon. I'm pretty sure it's the whold rubber ring thing. I got the same answer at svrider.com. As for the chain it has about exactally one inch of play so I think we have the right tension. Thanks for the help guys!

got the old sprocket back today.....dang thing is sandwitched between two pieces of rubber! Thanks again!
