Default Music around the home system

My father in law and sister in law have both said they are planning on getting rid of their ancient CD players, buying iPads and setting up a system where they have speakers in the lounge, kitchen and possibly a set upstairs. The idea is to save space and have music available in several rooms.

Now bearing in mind I own a turntable, vinyl, hundreds of CDs and a set of separates with floorstanding speakers and a sub woofer I'm not really clued up on this MP3s with titchy speakers malarkey.

Anyone on here got something similar set up at home? Recommendations and advice please OMO.

Thank you!

Take a look at Sonos. Not cheap but really good quality.

Yep, I'd go with SONOS too, when I can afford it.

Its the only system I can think of, that will do what your reli's want it to do

Bose also do this sort of set up. Like Sonos it isn't cheap, however the quality is worth the money you are paying. Best to go to a shop and hear the speakers to get an idea of the quality of sound.

I picked up a what hi-fi mag to read on the plane last month, there was a new system that won it's product of the year for this type of system. It is called Bluesound http://www.whathifi.com/awards/2014/multiroom-systems, quite expensive and makes SONOS look like good value but the What Hi-Fi article may be worth a read.

I've used Sonos at ElSaxo's and also a friend's from work, very good bits of kit, the fella from work has the soundbar and it sounds bloody awesome, but for £600 it better had

If you've already got amps and speakers though you could phase it in and get a Bluetooth receiver to plug in to a spare input on the amp, I think Viney got a QED one that he is happy with. I'm thinking of getting a cheap version for the garage to try it out.

I haven't got the room in the new house to get my stereo and speakers out so I'll be watching this with interest, a single smaller box that just works would be nice

I tend to use ipod docks around the house with ipod/bluetooth adaptors. Advantage is, anyone can use them to stream music from any phone/tablet and the quality sound wise is acceptable. I have one in the bedroom, one in the kitchen, and in the livingroom i have a bluetooth/line in adaptor to do the same to the AV amp. Works quite well, and not too expensive to implement.

I have 5 zones for my Sonos:
Study - one Play:5
Living room - 2xPlay:3 + Sub
Snug - one Play:5
Conservatory - Connect:Amp + B&W speakers
Kitchen - Play:1

So quite a variety.
I love the system; friends come round and either use the iPad or their phones to select music. Music quality is great for me (not a audiophile). It's great being able to group zones. Way more flexibility than a bluetooth speaker (but that flexibility may not be necessary).
For non-techies, it may be a problem to rip and manage all your music. I put mine on a NAS but it's another expense. Your router may be able to have a USB hard disk attached which becomes a very basic NAS and it is probably enough - worked well enough for me before I bought a NAS.

The Bluesound is supposedly better; I've not looked into it but I think the main selling point is hi-res music.
