Default 2nd Gen (2010) Rectifier

After being sat for a couple of months my SV has developed a charging issue. Low mileage bike (just over 4k miles) and the battery was new in January this year.

I assumed the battery was the issue, even though it seems to charge up fine on my
Ctek XS 0.8. I can charge it up and get a single start out of it. Go for a decent ride and it won't start again.

Was just about to pull the trigger on a new battery and thought I better check the rectifier. Bit of a pain to get to it (at least with large hands). Anyhow it seems I have one duff diode - one of the three pins reads open/null.

Anyhow, I see plenty of £30 replacements on eBay (most appear to be branded "UP2"). Worth a shot, or just a really horrible idea? If it's a bad idea, whats a decent option without (hopefully) spending a lot or hacking away at wiring?

I did search and found loads of posts for issues with the curvy, but didn't find anything about the pointy (or at least, I gave up looking after an hour or so).

i very much doubt that its the rec/reg unit on a K9 especially with just 4k on the clock. what may be the problem is the connector terminals have corroded and causing the issue. this happened to me and once cleaned up everything was fine. the pointy rec/reg are fairly good and robust units.

Well there you go. There was corrosion, but it didn't look terribly significant. A bit of a scrub and it works now. I owe you a pint - thanks!

It did seem strange it would have died on a low mileage bike, suddenly, after sitting for a time, and that there were precious few posts about 2nd gen failures. Sometimes you (I) can't see the forest through the trees I guess.

Don't forget to spray ACF50 into connections to help stop future corrosion..

Are you putting it on the actual terminals before connecting? I thought it was mean to be non-conductive.

the problem is due to the connector being a waterproof one, these type of connectors dont keep the moisture out 100% so when moisture does get inside it takes forever to evaporate and in doing so causes corrosion of the terminals.

dont worry acf50 is great for spraying inside. dont go mad with it a small drop or two is all that is needed. if you do spray it leave the connector open for an hour so the excess can drip out. acf50 will creep so a little goes a long way. ooohhh and remember to shake the can well before using it.

Cheers guys. I've ordered some ACF50 (as well as Wurth contact OL and OS). Bit of a tangent, but has anyone tried the "Corrosion Block" version of ACF-50? According to the website:

"Corrosion Block – Is the Industrial / Marine version of ACF-50. The main difference being a marginally thicker film and better suited where there may be dissimilar metals and / or salt water spray – so more suitable for Automotive/Marine/Industrial use."

I have used the ACF50 corrosion block grease. It's ok but not as good as standard ACF50 IMHO especially on Motorcycles. Stick with a can of ACF50 and you won't go far wrong. I've been using it for around 15 years. It also keeps cooling hoses from drying out and cracking with age

Standard ACF50 is good for most things, I have used it on many plugs on cars and bikes, it stops corrosion but lets the amps through no problem... the only thing better is snake oil LOL

Always have used ACF50, excellent stuff tbh, if it's good enough for the Royal navy ... its good enough for me.
