So would I - but that is just a hope you do not know what oil they actually used. I once had a car main dealer tell me I could use engine oil in the gearbox, only problem is that gearbox oil has extreme pressure additives and other stuff in it that engine oil does not. At least I know exactly what oil and fluids go into my cars and bikes - and that filters have actually been changed. As said by others earlier in thread you get good and bad dealers - but in these days of high labour costs, sometimes inexperienced staff, maybe high staff turnover when the franchise changes and tight margins you never know what they skimp on

SV650rules . So you buy a brand new bike from a Suzuki dealer , what do you say - ' don't bother putting any engine oil in it ,I will do that myself ' ! Warranty probably invalid to start with !

I've just put some Shell Advance Ultra full synthetic 10w40 in mine, it's only £25 for 4 litres on eBay so about £15 worth of oil went in.

My point?

Well I think most would agree that it's well worth getting at least the first service done at a dealer for the purposes of keeping the bike in Warranty, clearly Seeker's experience demonstrates that even the ultra reliable SV can develop an issue within the first couple of years.

However, there's nothing to stop you doing your own oil change several days / weeks / months later (if like SV650rules you want to know what oil you are running) - it hardly need break the bank.

I think it is definitely worth marking the underside of your oil filter before putting the bike in. If the filter gets changed - great, if not well if all else fails you could always just buy the correct Suzuki genuine filter and change it yourself - from the point of view of keeping it in Warranty, it's the dealer stamp that counts !

Bike or car comes from factory with oil in ( they have to run the engine after the engine is assembled and then again as part of the final quality testing or moving the bike to shipping / storage area ) and it will have 'running in oil' - a straight mineral oil that will allow parts to bed in - then you can put a higher grade oil in ( I ran Castrol Race 1 4T 10W40 semi-synthetic for next 1500 miles or so, and then started using Castrol 10W40 fully synth, and have done ever since ). The pre-deliver check at dealers probably involves no more than checking for dings and scratches, checking the oil level, the chain, tyre pressure and a few important bolts for tightness - oh and check that the brakes and lights work.

Points taken on the engine oil and 600 mile service. If you change the engine oil yourself you still have to dispose of it , which would mean about an 18 mile round trip to my local tip (assuming they take it )
I feel I should be able to do more 'straightforward ' servicing items myself but I Just end up having it done at the dealer's workshop !
