Default Just been Headhunted ???

Not from the usual agency promising more money and better prospects, but from an old managing director who set up on his own and just secured some work and is looking to expand the company...

Its more of a risk than my current position as i would be doing pretty much everything, QS'ing Designing, buidling regs design coordination... well everything required to get the job done... it sounds like a lot and it would need some serious consideration before I really consider it, but a chat over a pint cant hurt... and for a change it sounds really exciting

Im more shocked (but secretly flattered) that I was asked to go and meet him... and I was his first port of call (according to him, might just have been buttering me up)...

Whats more frustrating is its come at a time when im tempted as im far from happy where I am now.....

Any one else had this (nice) dilema...?

Kinda. Just been approached to join the Level 3 resolution team. Slightly more technical than my current role and even more specialised. No more money, just a change. As I'm pretty ****ed off with angry customers (due to one product being a little bit rubbish) giving me a hard time for something I have no control over,so have decided to go for it.

Good luck whatever you decide in the end.

Yup.

Been working in my pub for 5 1/2 years and have recently been transferred to a quite pub in another part of town. I did 6 months here 2 years ago and it nearly broke me. Dunno how long I'm gonna have to stay here either.

At the same time I've been offered a job with my mate fitting lifts. It's a complete carrear change but the basic pay is 5.5K more than I'm on and the bonuses and perks are bordering on the ridiculous (could end up earning 10K more than my current position in the first year and even more the year after!)

Such a dilemma cuz I REALLY love my old pub/job.

If I knew I had to stay here, I'd take it in a flash but with the possibility of going back to my old pub, I'm torn!

My head says yes but my heart says no. I'm so confused

I got approached by a big consultancy (EC Harris) for a job, but as soon as my current employer caught wind of it I got offered a good xmas bonus and a large pay review in the new year.

So I'm waiting to see what my bonus is and pay offer in the new year, if they have been bullcrapping me then it will be bye bye time.

I think I might need headhunting! I'm an experienced fitter working for a company that make industrial turbochargers for ships, trains, large diesel engines etc! Do I just sit back and watch the offers come flooding in now? lol

I got a good deal from a former employer when I basically had my hand forced by a prospective employer. I was looking to leave, and when I aced an interview, they then asked the killer question - "so , this month's notice thing ... is it flexible? I mean, could you start in 2 weeks?". I had to go to my (then current) employer, and ask. Obviously this was "lay your cards on the table" time ... They basically said, "Do you REALLY want to leave? Is there anything we can do to change your mind?". After a bit of negotiation they up'd my salary (nothing major, but they at least brought it into line with "market value"), and they sponsored me (to the tune of £8K) through my degree (although they then made me redundant right in the middle of my dissertation ).

Phil, I used to work in the licensing trade many moons ago ... and I really do empathise with you ... it was actually never my intention to work in the pubs full-time, but ... I got kicked off my HND Computer Studies course, and needed to earn some money fast ... at the time I was a part-time barman ... so suddenly I became trainee cellarman and full-time barman! Within a few years I was trained up to do relief management. Went from working in a really good and busy town-centre pub (taking £20K/week), to working in a small out-of-town pub that was DEAD (took about £3K/week). It was ok there ... I just got on with it ... but I'd have much rather worked in the town-centre pub cos I'd worked there for 3 or 4 years and knew everybody there!

I left the licensing trade after about 4 or 5 years because I liked to "do things by the book" and the licensees didn't like that - they preferred me to keep their little fiddles going for them whilst they were away ... and because I didn't, it really showed in the "stocking in/out" ... which left them having to answer some fairly awkward questions from the brewery ... hence I was "constructively dismissed". I don't blame them ... and I don't hold a grudge about it ... best thing that coulda happened as I then went and got a job in IT (eventually)

Word of warning though people (and I'm sure you're well aware of this, but nobody has said it yet) ...

THE GRASS ISN'T ALWAYS GREENER ...

I've left one job for another because of the lure of better pay, more career prospects, better benefits, company car, etc. only to be back at my former employer within a year because the company I went to wasn't bringing in enough work to keep me busy ... so I went from doing highly technical jobs (installation and upgrades to IBM midrange business systems) to doing glorified PC support (drive 60 miles to plug a friggin printer in that someone had forgotten to do when they decided to move the office around), and basically lugging monitors around for the company trainers!

Which reminds me ... don't burn ya bridges either ya never know when you may need something from someone LOL

You need to have lunch with clients and managers, get on friendly terms with them, do a good job on their job, they recommend you to friends within other companies, who in turn contact you 'for a chat'

Or thats the way it worked for me.

See, in that situation I would (and have) jumped

Why is it that its only after there is a chance of you leaving that they are willing to pay you top rate?

If you are worth ay, £5k more today, wasnt you worth it last month, or the month before?

Employers, well you owe them nothing......

That pi$$es me off too, but the truth is they're the ones holding the cheese. I approached my boss last month, told him that I was really down on motivation out of crap pay and general lack of interest, so my productivity was taking a serious blow which wasn't helping his own cause that much. Result: almost 15% pay rise + company car. Why didn't he do it before? Because by definition bosses will try to pay you as little as they can get away with. Was I worth the same last year? Probably yes. Was he willing to pay it last year had we had this conversation before? F*ck knows. All I know is I got it now. It's still crap, but it's better than what I was on before!

I'm not sure I'd be welcome to do lunch in my greasy overalls! With it being quite a specialised area there isn't likely to be friends with companies! We are currently owned by siemens and they have strict policies on pay etc so it's not as if I can ask for more money or perks. There is room for promotion, but by promotion I mean literally a few quid a month more with a lot more hassle and lots more paperwork, which I'm just not interested in. We are in the process of being sold to a british company with a lot less rigid structure so maybe things will look up then!
