For all he knows you could have filled the petrol tank with sand or bodged the engine and if sold it's coming right back to him. Or simply he might not have wanted it back and had to put a price that made it appealing to him!
Upshot is; always sell bikes privately unlessyou get an amazing deal from a shop.
Edit: just realised you bought it new, it is now 'used' - makes the dealer's offer look better.
P.S won't you miss the forum if you sell the SV?
What about trying to please the customer?! Shouldn't the shop accept some responsibility for selling a bike with a seat that most people seem to find uncomfortable without modification. What about fitness for purpose ?! It's ok making the seat as low as possible but not by reducing the thickness of padding to such an extent that the seat is unsuitable for sitting on for any length of ride ?!

That's for the manufacturer to do, shops are just there to resell a product. By that logic you'd be arguing with Tesco that most people find Glenn's bargain bucket vodka too disgusting to drink without a cocacola additive and you'd find shelf stackers sellotaping cans of coke to vodka bottles on the shelves and upping the price.
If you were to part ex that bike and they noticed the seat (& it's value) they will absolutely take it off before selling to the next customer. I'm not saying it's right, but that's how it goes - and I do see the shops side to some extent, some people are really anal about bikes being standard or unmodified (insurance?) it might actually work against their sale. Not to mention, I'm afraid ,seats probably don't add too much to the purchase value imagine someone shopping for an SV (that doesn't know about the SV Pilesyndrome) 'I want to spend £5000', filter results to £5k... they never see the £5500 bike with the fancy seat or if they do happen to glance it they may not notice the seat and think "that shop's so expensive I can get an SV for £500 less 10 miles down the road".

I've never bought a new bike or car, partly due to finances, partly for this very reason. Depreciation is very steep from new.

Adam, If you ever do, I hope you keep it a little longer than the others.
I've never bought a new vehicle either, but mainly for your first reason.

Quite a few of us no longer have an SV, doesn't mean having to leave

Just buy a Bagster seat. Looks comfy - pics on US SV site: https://www.svrider.com/threads/anot....395797/page-2

Does it raise the seat height? Dunno. Pretty much any bike you buy (other than a cruiser which has other comfort issues) will have a taller seat than the SV (AL7 onwards).

Why can't you apply for vehicle tax for the next month? I want to get it taxed for May (tomorrow) and it is trying to charge me from the 1st of April! What a joke
