Vehicle Tracking Petition!!!
I'm not sure if this has been posted before, sorry if it has.
This is genuine, I've signed up > >Sarah Kennedy was on about this proposed car tax scheme on the radio, > >apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to >the 'Pay as you go' road tax. > >The petition is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell >anybody about it. Therefore at the time of Sarah's comments only >250,000 people had signed it so far and 750,000 signatures are >required to stop them introducing it. This is legit... 10 Downing >Street's website. Once you've given your details (you don't have to >give your full address, just house number and postcode will do), they >will send you an e-mail with a link in it. Once you click on that >link, you'll have signed the petition. Democracy in action? > >The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you >having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly >bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a >recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural >florist and £194 for a delivery driver (per month!). A non working mother >who used >the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month. On top of >this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know >where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been >going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time >you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your >monthly bill. If you care about our freedom, please sign the petition >on No 10's new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people >as possible. http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/ |

Once again, the email's utter, utter *****. The petition is a public originated one, it just happens to be on the government website. 10 seconds looking over the site will show anyone this, you can also propose your own petitions. I proposed "Down with this sort of thing" but it was rejected as frivolous, the bounders "apparently there is only one month left to register your objection to
the 'Pay as you go' road tax.", just an utter joke. And again, talking about "the government's proposal" when there is no formal proposal. If this is debate then count me out, it just proves you can get people to sign up to anything on the internet. For the rest of it, I've said it all before the last 2 times this came out But the covering email is new. If you have to resort to misinformation to forward your cause you've already lost, and it's just more ammunition for anyone who'd rather ignore the results- they can quite legitimately point out that it was promoted under false pretenses.

Yes, it's legit. It's still not a government poll. It's a petition started by a private citizen.
"We the undersigned petition the prime minister... submitted by Peter Roberts."

Understand where you're coming from Northy, but if it's gathered enough momentum to make the national news and radio shows (even if it's the naff Sarah Kennedy's) then it must have reached the attention of the government's media watchers, and perhaps it will make a small contribution to making them realise what a rebellion there will be if they do go down this route?

I agree with the petition about the monitoring of personal movements. That would be worrying and unacceptable if that was what it was about. But is it about that. The wording of the petition sounds a tad hysterical to me. |
