And yes you really do have to remove the rear mudguard assembly then separate the 2 halves (inner and outer).
Didn't cut an access panel, decided it would look a bit bodgy, and couldn't get an LED, but having done it once it no longer holds any fears for me.
Glad you got it fixed. Took me a while on my Curvy the first time I took the Rear seat fairing off to find the two little JIS screws that were stopping it coming off underneath. I painted them white before refitting so I knew where to look for them
