OMO: Recommend a socket set
It's a friends 40th birthday next week. I have the big Halfords Advanced Professional 200 piece set. It's extremely versatile with everything you need in one set, it's become my "go to" set of tools.
http://www.halfords.com/motoring-tra...et-spanner-set And he's always borrowing it and his wife's told me it's on his birthday wish list. Thing is 150 quid is way outside what we'd normally spend on each others birthday presents. Even if I get three of us to chip in, £50 would be a bit dear for the other two. In the 5 years I've had mine though, I've NEVER used any of the imperial AF sockets, they are a waste of space and money, unless you have classic cars or bikes. So are there any sets out there that have that kind of versatility, but only have metric, so need less pieces, so cost less money? I believe in buy cheap buy twice, so looking for a similar quality to Halfords Advanced Pro, with lifetime warranty, so Bahco, Teng, etc, etc Thanks |

About 100 quid would be ideal. If the other two only want to spend 20 quid I'll put in the 60, but I think they'd be happy with 33 quid each. Take the £150 quid Halfords set, throw away all the useless AF bits, and price accordingly, that would be perfect. Halfords do a £100 quid set, but it hasn't got some of the pieces I do use, and has all the AF pieces I don't. http://www.halfords.com/motoring-tra...et-spanner-set Last edited by Fordward; 10-05-15 at 09:34 PM. |

Re: OMO: Recommend a socket set
depends what your friend is going to be using it for. 12 point sockets are bad for rusted on nuts/bolts and this is why i use 6 point as often as i can. if its for working on bikes you dont want to be using 1/2'' as they are to heavy and you end up snapping things or stripping threads. 3/8 are the way to go.

Re: OMO: Recommend a socket set
I have a set of Kamasa from Halfords, had them 20+ years and still ok I'm sure they have a life time guarantee but never had reason to take them back!but as Bibio says get 3/8 drive, mines 1/2" and as he says it's really a bit industrial for 99% of bike work!!!

Re: OMO: Recommend a socket set
I prefer 1/2" drive, but I have a stubby ratchet for the small jobs
I use 3/8 on the hex drives as they feel right
