Default What oil would you use in a Triumph S4?

Well more accurately, my Speed Four. I'm a bit confused. I've always used 10w40 semi-synth previously, but owner handbook only has a "recommended" oil as a 15w50 fully synth Mobil oil.

So, what to opt for?

10w40 semi or fully synth?
15w50 semi or fully synth?

Given my bike seems to run quite hot, I'm thinking a 15w50 oil would be best option, and I can't really see the point with fully synth as the service interval is only 4,000 miles. Anyone got any thoughts?

Cheers

Use what it says in the manual!

15w50.

Use the fully synth. The triumph triple engines will blow up right sharp if you use some cheap crap chip fat from the supermarket in them. I would not risk it.

15w50 seemed like best option, but I'm not talking about putting utter garbage oil in, just wasn't keen on spending upwards of £40 on oil.

And if I'm dropping it out every 4,000 miles it's putting the squeeze on the old biking budget!

I know. But I would not risk the IL4 being as sensitive as them, and use some inferior oil.

With fully synth you are paying for its resistance to degradation and sludge formation under lots of heat and pressure.

Like I say, I wouldn't risk it.

I hear the arguments on fully synth, but how frequent do you hear of semi synth sludging up these days with new oil technology and such? Not being ar$ey, just think there's a lot of hype attached to fully synth stuff.

I'd probably go with fully synth in a new R6 as it revs its bits off, but mine's in the red at 14000rpm.

Your bike, your engine, your money. You know what I'd do given what we know at the moment. I have seen a T509 engine blown to bits literally a couple of miles after an oil change with some fairly cheap stuff.
I don't know the full story, nor if there were mitigating factors like the engine already being ready to go pop. But that is the limit of my experience on the matter.

Better to ask people who have used these engines more, perhaps TSM could shed light on it? Or a TT6 owners club or something? If people have used lower grades of oil, and got away with it for decent mileage, then crack on with it.

But, untill you get some reliable info as to how well other grades of oil perform, then I'd stick to the full synth.
