So got some cheap bolts for a suzuki moped calliper to replace my missing gixxer one. Figured there was a chance they'd be the same, and they only cost £1. Turns out they're too long, so that's no drama, I'll just angle grid off a few mm. See, I aint no cowboy!

Couldn't get a good grip on he bolt in my vice though, so wrapped it in a tie down strap. Nice and snug. Started grinding and things got hot. Bolt is glowing red! BURN BABY YEAH! End of bolt falls off as planned, but nylon strap burst into flames and welds itself to the bolt.

So I whip this flaming bolt out of the vice on it's nylon strap and look around for what to extinguish it with. The only liquid is petrol, so I figured that was a bad idea. Ran outside into the garden and start spinning this flaming nylon chord around my head. "GO OUT YOU *******!" I scream.

Nylon strap burns through, flaming bolt flies across garden towards dog. Dog ****s itself and runs into glass door. I laugh, pick up bolt, hot potato juggle it into the garage, peel off the cooling nylon, then try it out on the calliper. Perfect fit!

So I've learnt my lesson! If I accidentally set fire to something, try to put it out with petrol anyway, even if it seems silly, otherwise I might scare the dog. Mechanical XP +1.

Hack saw then smooth the ends with a grinder works a bit better

Possibly you ruined the strength of the bolt by heating it up so much. Maybe not.

I'd have let it burn itself out then peeled the melted plastic off.

The hacksaw didn't even occur to me! My mind went instantly to the angle grinder when I realised I was out of dremmel cutting discs. Typically I only use a hacksaw when removing brake lines I've snapped as a result of not attaching the calliper to the bike at all.

Brilliant. Have some spare K1 Gixxer caliper bolts you could have had for nothing though. Just saying.
