i'm back - need advice on buying write off
Hi all
finslly back online following 'off', house move, and BT messing up phone line and adsl - twice! Stuck in the house (still on crutches) sucks, stuck in with no internet tests your sanity... so i'd like advice on buying back my bike from the insurers and rebuilding it. I have a garage etc, and the confidence to do it, question is how do i go about it (confirmed written off on friday) and of course is it worth it? I have not seen the bike or had a report from the assessor, i have no idea what they want for it (or even if its available) but i've been told its a cosmetic write off. Right side hit telegraph pole (through leg) and left side slid down road. Who should i contact first, will asking my insurers be a bad idea? lots of questions i know but i haven't done this in fifteen years or so. cheers Ed |

Re: i'm back - need advice on buying write off
You can only ask your insurers, as it's up to them how much they want for it.
Should be worth while buying back IMO. Best to get onto the scrappie as well if that's where it is as they tend to treat it like sh*t if they think it's going to be scrapped & then it won't be just cosmetic For a K7 the buy back price should be less than £1K. Good Luck & gWS |

Rebuilding a bike is a fantastic project, and the finished article makes it all worth doing.
Find out what category write off it is, this will then decide your budget and the way to go with the project. |

Re: i'm back - need advice on buying write off
Thanks guys, i'll get on to the insurer and also try to get hold of the scrappy (if the insurer will tell me who it is), see if i can get a price and a list of the damage and post it here for opinions.
Then as DD infered, the question becomes whether to do a cheap commuter rebuild and buy something quicker (with compensation) or take the opportunity to do something fun? Will i become eligible for storage costs if i buy it? Remember hearing that somewhere. Ed |

Re: i'm back - need advice on buying write off
Yes, but part of your claim -
A garage is quite happy to store a bike if they are going to get the work, but take that away from them & they will charge for all the storage to date. So best to get it out of there ASAP. Try & get your ins. co. to pay it, but the garage might not accept that & ins. co would just be paying out your valuation not costs. |

Plus making any SV faster is not financially viable. So, buy back, get it rideable - then if it's what you want, keep it & bank the payout, if not sell it & get what you want. |
