Default SV1000 suspension

I've seen the SV1000 referred to a few times as having better suspension than the 650. How so? Are the front fork springs and oil a better match for heavier riders than on the 650, and is the rear shock much better?

Ultimately, is the SV1000 much different for hard cornering, and is it better or worse than the SV650 (all on standard stuff, no aftermarket add ons)?

Ta!

Fully adjustable cartridge forks and fully adjustable much better quality rear shock. The difference when riding is dramatic.

Indeed - although the bikes look very similar, their looks are about as similar as it gets. They share almost none of the componants, including frame, brakes, more complex engine management (I think), wingarm and suspension to name a few.

I couldn't tell you how the suspension internals differ, but on the 1000 it is fully adjustable, where as on the 650 it's obviously not.

So even though the 1000 is heavier, if it's set up right it should be just as fast as a 650 on twisties?

Am thinking of going for one as the cost/insurance isn't that much more than the 650. Concerned about slower handling (though it's not like I chuck it about) and the reduced tank range.

Sounds like the handling isn't too much of a problem. Weird though - mate has an SV1000 and when it was next to my 650, they looked almost identical apart from the twin exhausts on the 1000, no higher, no longer...

It's only a tiny bit heavier (20 kilos?) and is faster through the twisties as it's more planted and the suspension is simply better. You might have to work it harder with more countersteer as the rear tyre being a 180 section will slow the steering down a little but the superior suspension will cope with road surfaces better and if the rider's good enough will definitely be a faster bike regardless of the extra oomph.

Try one.

I'll tell that to my missus next time she tells me I eat too much junk food

Ta for that, it's sounding good for the SV1000... now I just need to have a think about the tank range... don't think the 160+ miles I was getting on the 650 will be matched by the 1000...

If you mean the K3 1000 I'm amazed, they're different animals completely.
