Default Legal number plate size?

HI . I'm in the process of fitting a tail tidy on my sv and it seems I have to drill a couple more holes in the top of my standard 9x7 number plate so will have a couple holes extra.. ;/ .

I seen people with smaller number plates, is there a legal limit to the number plate size? How small can you go?

Motorcycles and tricycles
There are separate provisions for motorcycles and tricycles. This means, motorcycles registered from 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.
Motorcycles registered before 1 September 2001 can display a number plate at the front, but do not have to. The number plate must be a “2-line” number plate and must be displayed on all motorcycles registered on or after 1 January 1973.

requirements for motorcycles shown below.
Character height 64m
Character width (except the figure 1 or letter I) 44mm
Character stroke 10 mm
Space between characters 10mm
Space between groups 30mm
Top, bottom and side margins (minimum) 11mm
Vertical space between groups 13mm

yeah I saw that site but doesn't actually say a plate size as letter spacings and sizes doesn't help me when I'm ordering a number plate : (

Well so long as letter sizes, spacings, and margins are adhered to it can be as small as possible surely? Pretty sure when you get one cut it's a standard motorbike plate size they print onto anyway?

Order your number plate then trim it so the outside margin is 11mm.Most new number plates come with proper spacing and font as listed above. You should also have the manufacturers name on it, usually small print at the bottom and the BSI Kite mark showing that it is the proper reflective material. There is no definition by law as to the outer dimensions so trimming a big plate is legal.

The above refers to a new numberplate

As long as the typeface spacing and border is right, you'll be fine.

With my plate, it contains two 1's so the plate shrinks considerably. Any good plate maker will be able to tell/ make you a plate. It was the plate maker who said to shrink it (It was originally going to be for a Euro plate, but that got knocked on the head). Also the one he told me was any vehicle registered pre 2001 (Y plate) doesn't legally need the sign makers name and possibly the Postcode.

The only thing that has to be on regardless is the BSAU 411 tag

The good on line show plate websites have natty little wizards that show you how it will look.
That's how i giggled mine to fit the right size letters but naughty font with a manufactures logo in place of the euro bit

Wrong---BSAU tag and either the manufacturer or outlet.
Read the DVLA site regarding BSAU tag
