Why is it still called Dakar (or even Paris-Dakar)when it is held in South America?

I suppose if you ask a million people what a 'Dakar' is, most will say it's a race.
(at least, the race is more popular than the place!!) |

Cheers, just watched Race to Dakar on DVD by Charley Boorman. I really enjoyed it so have just Sky+ this years
