Cleaning the chain - SV650.org

Hey all,

I'm going to give me bike chain a bloody good ol' cleaning this weekend. Its not in bad shape but I have neglected the oiling recently. I think i owe it the attention.

So here are the quiestions.

1) what is the best cleaner for chain and prockets?

2) What is the best chain lube? (beyond scott oiler, which is comnig soon)

Cheers and football beers.

Paraffin.

90w Gear oil (cheaper than engine oil)

and I am still trying to find a good lube !!......

Paraffin is called summat different now in B and Q..

parasene??... its NEAR the BBQ stuff and about a fiver for LOADS..

PJ1 is a good chain lube. I also found shell chain wax to be quite good.

How does old engine oil work though exactly? Surely the idea behind changing the oil in your engine is that the old oil is losing it's lubricating properties?

I've been using Profi Dry Lube for about a year now.
Virtually no flick off and my chain still seems in pretty good shape.

Need the chain to be pretty much spotless before you start with it though.

as sugested..parafin or what ever you wanna call it

good old scrub with an old tooth brush and then soak a rag in it and wipe all over
dont get it on your tyre tho as its very slippery stuff.
let it dry naturaly then wipe over with a dry cloth.
DONT do what i did and buy the motorax electronic chain oiler like i did its very awkward to fill and messy to boot..save your money up and get a scottoiler you cant beat them

the good thing about parafin is that if you mix it with washing up liquid this makes a cheap fantastic de-greaser
