Default air filter or carb balance

lately i have been getting milage of about 40 mpg and about 100 miles before the fuel light comes on, i have noticed a fuel smell and the back of my exhaust has a black carbon type stuff on it, so i thought i would get the carbs balanced, then i thought if i am going to get that done i may as well change the filter, so a new k and n is getting fitted wed, its a 02 curvy. which i have had for a year, no idea when the air filter was last changed as i have only had the bike for a year.

what i am wondering is if the air filter is in need of replacing, could this be the cause of the crap fuel milage and the rich fuel smell?

Yes. It's not the only thing that could be amiss, but if you're unsure of how old the filter is and if it looks dirty, then it's a sensible first thing to check.

If you have had it a year and dont know when bits were last changed that suggests you have not had it serviced and dont know when that last happened?
I bet its well overdue one and that should sort it out.
