Hass anyone on here painted their own under tray to colour match their bike?

Re: Painting
Painted fairing lowers silver to match rest of bike. Used aerosols from (can't remember, will have to check cans in garage).
Made a spray booth out of a very large cardboard box and placed a turn-table inside. As with any painting, the better the prep, the better the end result. Cost me about half what a pro sprayer quoted and had the satisfaction that I'd done it myself - pleased with results once I'd cut the laquer coat back with used 1200 grit w&d and then polished it with good quality rubbing compound. . |

Re: Painting
Undertrays and bellypans both take a beating from road debris, and home spraying usually means using cellulose or at best singlepack top coats, which are pretty soft. You can get very good results from an aerosol, but I wouldn't expect it to last too well- even factory-applied 2-pack clears can take impact damage after all. Getting a good colourmatch is also a total sod on some of the Suzuki colours.
Also, by the time you buy your tin of primer, tin of base coat, tin of laquer, wet and dry papers, and rubbing compound you've got a fair bit spent on raw materials, then add in your own time.

Re: Painting
I painted mine with a little help from me dad .. Used a paint kit from paints4u.com http://www.paints4u.com/ProductDetai...productID=5423..
Did a crackin job, it isnt perfect but you can't tell unless you stand on your head and stare at it. As Hovis says its not a big area and its mainly hidden anyway. Best advice is lots of thin coats,, on mine we did about 3 undercoat sanded it down, then about 5 or 6 of the colour sanding out the blobs and mistakes and then one last top coat being careful not to blob. but if you do its not the end of the world just wait for it to dry sand it out and then try again.. finally the clear coat or laquer.. did 4 good thin coats of this to protect it. Hope this helps, sorry about the essay

Re: Painting
That's a very good price, that. I think that's teh singlepack laquer too, rather than the celly you usually get in car paint aerosols. I like Paints4u, that's where I got my stuff to do the bike.
