We have a plastic tree, which sounds pretty un-green, but it's lasted us a good 25 years so far.
I seem to recall buying a "living tree" once only to find it went brown and dropped most of it's needles within a week. Pulling it out of the pot after Christmas it had no roots and the filling was a clay/subsoil mix, so the poor thing had no chance! And I'd been utterly ripped off.
