.....when, oh when will I learn the importance of backing up data?

I booted up my PC last night, and, like it occassionaly does, it froze shortly after starting up - i.e. when the startup apps (AV, firewall, etc.) are opening.

The only way to resolve this is to hit the restart button. So I did.

It then rebooted, got to the desktop, and crashed - BSOD.

I rebooted, same again....over and over. I tried to start in safe mode, but the boot-up screens flash by so fast I can't see what the hotkey is.

So I tried to run recovery, but that only works when you next start up - and it would crash before it got there.

I tried booting from the CD, and that said there was no hard drive found

If the HD is dead, surely it wouldn't boot up completely, then crash? I had errors in the File Allocation table on an old hard drive, and that wouldn't boot at all. Is this likely to be a data error, rather than a hardware error?

I'm looking into getting someone to come out tomorrow to see if theey can fix it, but I don't really want to fork out for a new drive if the one I have is recoverable.

Any ideas?

i changed everything on mine because of lock ups and the computer turning its self off but in the end it was the motherboard.
