Tbh I think the best set up would be a pure electric drive that has a normal engine to charge it, similar to the range extender but with more guts so it can actually sustain itself on a long drive so it doesn't need to be powered by the regular engine like a normal hybrid.

Yeah, Chevrolet Volt can do 50 miles on battery and up to 500 miles if you use the 1.4 litre engine to keep battery going. IMHO 50 miles would do most people most days and a plug in charge overnight, better than the Mitsubishi outlander PHEV which only does less than 20 miles on battery and then <30 mpg on engine, and only 10 gallon tank.

I think in the Outlander, as with other PHEVs the petrol engine actually drives the wheels as well.

I have thought about the Volt, or the Ampera as it's called this side of the pond, but it wears a Vauxhall badge and that is enough to put me off on it's own.

Cheers Lenny, didn't realise there was anything like that in production. Also makes me wonder why more aren't as it makes the most sense given the current infrastructure.

Spoken like a true EV car salesman, but EV not for everyone.. The government giving taxpayers money to fund charging point is like using taxpayer money to build petrol stations, which never happened. Energy companies should fund charging infrastructure and should charge users a market price for charging, which includes a proportion of cost of installation and upkeep of points, as well as cost of electricity. Too much taxpayer money being spent on renewables and subsidies for EV.

Buy and invest in your home country
A few years ago, I was visiting one of our offices and bumped into two guys I last worked with 10 years ago in China. One had been the site director and the other the project director for the conventional island of a nuclear power plant. It was our last job there as we had entered into a technology transfer deal. Giving away the know how. It didn't matter as we would have a new generation to sell against what the Chinese could do with our old tech. Except we stopped development.

Back to the two old guys. a good chin wag and they told me that they had been brought back out of retirement. As they had the most up to date knowledge of building nuclear power plants. Not surprising, my last UK work was on Sizewell. Since then 3 in China with 660MW turbines. There is a real lack of nuclear power expertese outside of France where we scaled up to 10000MW
