Re: The MTB thread
Easy to go wrong when buying used, especially at the cheap end of the market- it's not so much that you can't get a decent bike but the condition's everything, too easy to get a lemon. Especially as cheaper parts can often wear fast (and may not be that well looked after.
If I had £300 to spend I'd be nipping down to Decathlon, their rockrider 5.3 is a perfectly decent bike with a proper warranty.

Re: The MTB thread
+1, or something like the carrera kraken or one of the Dawes models, as long as you have front suspension with lockout and hydraulic disc brakes for the type of things you want to do will be ideal.

Re: The MTB thread
While we're on the subject...
If one was looking at picking up something for practising jumps / generally fannying around the Skills park / 4 X track at Mabie on, say a BMX or such like. Where the heck do you start!? I've not looked at a BMX since I was about 14, and even then never owned one, and would really rather like not to end up buying something that was built for a 6 year old. If anyone's got a few suggestions (i.e. what are the 'if in doubt, get an XYZ's of the BMX/ jump bike world?) that'd be really cool? |

Re: The MTB thread
IN fairness cable operated disc brakes are crappy, but if you were so inclined you could buy a set of hope mono's for £75 off ebay with little effort.
Its hardly a shocker that the none branded forks are crappy too, but come on they're buying a £300 bike. Be pleased its all fastened together well and on a nice enough frame. If you want nice brakes and forks spend more lol, on that basis I stand by my previous |

Re: The MTB thread
Very good points 'Ski. I know mountain bike stuff is (generally) hugely overpriced at the best of times, but so many people just don't realise that proper, decent quality stuff that'll actually stand up to the kind of abuse it'll get on a trail costs a lot of dosh.
That £300 bike above is actually bang on for the money, especially when you consider a decent set of forks alone would typically START at that. http://www.tredz.co.uk/rockshox-bike-forks <-- e.g., and I deliberately didn't use Fox as an example, as they're even more pricey. You don't *need* top spec stuff to enjoy getting into biking and when all's said and done pretty much every single part can be upgraded as/when it either wears out or you get into it more. |
