Default Wiring help please??

Wiring help please?

As some of you may know I am trying to convert my SVS99 to a street-fighter and although I know what I want to do the wiring is proving to be a problem.

So far I have tapped into the loom and taken a feed from the oil pressure light and neutral light to enable me to monitor engine/gearbox conditions in my ‘home made dash’ but when I hook these wires up to a multimetre there is no power coming through with the bike in neutral and ignition on and when I take it out of gear i.e neuatral light goes out there is 12v showing. Does anyone know how I would wire up a home made dash to enable me to still use the existing idiot lights as the current seems to be there at the wrong times…

Both the neutral and oil lights are permanenetly live, (with the ignition on, of course), it is the earth, (neutral), connection of both lamps that is switched.

Very simply when you get neutral the wire that goes to the 'switch' is grounded on to the engine case, (an excellent earth), same goes for the oil light, when there's no pressure the wire is earthed.

With the bulb in place, were you to check voltage at the switch when not in neutral you will get battery voltage, (ie 12ish volts), the bulb is lived and thus the cabling all the way to the switch is too, only when the wire is earthed is there a PD across the lamp filament.

I see, sort of.

So I need to find the correct earth for the neutral/oil switch to enable me to wire up new lights and get them working correctly?

Any ideas which one I should use, any help would be great as I'm a bit lost when it comes to 'odd' wiring?

Please don't tell me you're using those godawful plastic things that snap on to wires that cheap alarm fitters use, this could be the reason if they haven't made a proper connection, though usually they go the other way and all but snap the wire.

Easiest thing to do with jobs like this is to chop the connector off the old clocks and wire up everything to it in the same places, also means you have a single connector if you have to remove the new clocks again.

No I'm not.

I have taken the front loom off and have undone the palstic cover and slodered into the 'correct' wire.

I just need to know what wires to connect to get the neutral/oil pressure and temp lights to work.

Hogzi, I did scribble a note down when I was checking wiring.

Here's my findings for the curvy 'S' model clock connector.....
Colours refer to the loom end not the clocks!

RED, +12V
ORANGE/RED, SPEEDO
PINK, SPEEDO
BLACK/YELLOW, TACHO PULSE
BLACK/GREEN, WATER TEMP
GREEN/TYELLOW, OIL PRESSURE
BLACK/WHITE, NEGATIVE (earth)
ORANGE/GREEN, NEGATIVE (for water, neutral and fuel status)
Lt GREEN, TURN (R)
BLACK, TURN (L)
RED/BLACK, FUEL SENSOR
BLACK/Lt GREEN, FUEL SENSOR
GREY, BACKLIGHTING
BLACK/WHITE, NEGATIVE (for mainbeam, turn (L&R), backlighting)
BLUE/BLACK, NEUTRAL
YELLOW, MAIN BEAM

There is a diode in the (L) Turn path so that the dash light is shared for both L&R but only the correct one lights up at the indicator.
I didn't work out which wire was for low fuel (flashes) and which for near empty (steady lit) as I wasn't bothering with it.

Hope my findings were 100%!
