Tyre pump

Can anyone recommend a decent tyre pump, for use with bike and car?
I currently have one from Halfords, but to be honest, it's so poor quality if could have been made by David Blunkett (no offence to any riders on here who are blind).

What I think I'd really like is one where I can enter a pressure, plug it in and it stops when it gets to that pressure. And not made out of tissue paper.
Any recommendations?

I use a bicycle track side pump and a seperate pen type pressure gauge. No calibration issues and I got all of that stuff at halfrods.

Being a tightfisted old git I can't afford the Halfords stuff. For
the last 3 years I have been using a Wilkinsons foot pump with
pressure gauge. Cost me, I think, £4.59. It is, of course, made of
tissue paper.

As to "enter a pressure, plug it in and it stops when it gets to
that pressure" I don't know whether such a device exists.

PS. I am also the proud owner of pen-type pressure gauge given to me
by my dad over 30 years ago. I haven't noticed discrepancies with
the foot pump readings.

Try Argos, item number 7507025 (enter in search box), I tried a direct link but it threw a wobbler.

I got a challenge compressor a while ago to take the insides out as an emergency compressor to carry on the bike while touring. They're actually quite well made. You do pay quite a premium for the preset and digi pressure gauge, but it's not a bank breaker.

Fit a car accessory socket to plug into, fused of course. The compressors work a lot better with a few more volts from the engine running too!

I just leave the compressor fully charged, check the pressure every time before I ride and put a couple of pound in if necassary.


Tyre pressures should be checked regularly and when cold. I had my guage on my tyre inflator checked using the cal lab at work a few years ago and still trust it to be more accurate than any hand held guage. If anything, I slightly over inflate and then let out pressure until the guage reads as required.

I was brought up with a compressor always available and thought it normal to buy one when I first bought a house and had to start equiping my own garage. TBH it is a damm sight easier to use air power for tyres, wheel nuts, general mechanicing than brawn.

I use a Michelin double barrel foot pump and a Blue-Point(?? Never heard of them) gauge. I've never had to fully inflate a tyre from flat so they're fine.

U can get a reasonable pressure guage for around a tenner from Halfords. It doesn't matter what you use to inflate the tyres as long as the pressure is right.

Erm.....I bought one that does just that.........and its a Halfords one

blue-point are ithink from the 'snap-on family'
just a level down from the real thing ,theyre not cheap tat so it should b ok [/
