Grease me up!
after my incident with the pheasant and the mud, I'm going to give everything a good wash down tonight, can anyone recommend a good grease for all the levers i.e. clutch, clutch shifter, stand etc etc.
Cheers! |

Out of curiousity I've got a big tub of Castrol moly grease in the garage, can anyone tell me what it's best used for, and where the LM grease is better or worse? I got it free with a tub of Castrol copper and LM grease so I wonder what I should be using it for...

Moly grease should be used for bearings and any other components that are under high loads as it doesnt breakdown under the high pressure. It's a high melting point grease and is a lot smoother (finer) then copper grease.
Typically it's used on engine internals when rebuilding an engine sometimes mixed in with some clean engine oil. Copper grease should only be used as an anti-seize agent as its relatively gritty and can do more harm then good if used in bearings etc. |

My local suzuki dealer recommended lithium based grease, like Castrol LM. I use it and have nothing bad to say about it.

Castrol LM is a general purpose grease particularly suited to ball and roller bearings.
Molygrease (I think the Castrol version is MS3 or similar) is best for low speed sliding bearings, particularly with reversing movement like "old fashioned" swingarm plain bushes, it's not really recommended for rolling element bearings since it can encourage sliding/skidding. Neither of these is what is normally considered "waterproof" in that they tend to form sludgy emulsion gunge with water. If it's going to be splashed with water, for example handbrake linkages under cars, or perhaps sidestand pivots, a lithium based "white" grease is ideal (available as aerosol), or the Castrol CL grease though the CL is very messy stuff and I find it gets thicker with time. Bike dealers will usually spray levers, footrest pivots etc with a "white" grease at a service. The other thing I've found I use a lot is aerosol "Rubber and Nylon" lubricant available from places like Halfwits, ideal for lined cables etc. ...and of course the dear old "red rubber grease" for exposed bits of brake pistons. |
