Speedo problem - weird one.
My speedo has been playing up for a few weeks now. In the morning on the way to work, it is completely fine. 30 miles on the motor way, and 5 miles city riding.
On the way home the initial 5 miles in the city it is still fine, and then when I get onto the motorway section, 9 times out of 10, as soon as the speed gets up to 50mph+ it plays up. Sometimes it just jumps from random speeds below what I am doing, and then drops to 0mph and then other times it does falls to 0mph. It stays at 0mph until I slow down for traffic or lights and starts working again when the speed falls below 30mph. Then once I pull away from the lights, half the time the speedo goes back to 0mph after about 35mph, and the other half it works as normal. Has anyone had this problem before? It is really spinning me out why it’s fine in the morning but plays up on the way home. |

Re: Speedo problem.. weird one!
i had a similar problem where the speedo would suddenly stop working and then start again for no apparent reason. i evenually found the problem was the speedo converter [as mine is an import and speedo was in km/h] once i replaced this i have had no more problems.

Re: Speedo problem.. weird one!
Although it probably is the speedo drive, when it happened to me it was a loose connection, so worth checking that out before removing the front wheel to replace the drive.
Mine was linked with a loss of power when switching to high beam which lead me to a loose connection with the -ve battery terminal |

Re: Speedo problem - weird one.
My K3 just started doing domething similar, I get random speeds up to but not exceeding 186mph, and I'm fairly sure it won't go that fast.
It flicks to a different random number every half a second or so, it might stay at 0mph or 186mph for a bit, then spaz about again. I suspect it's that pesky rotor as per the photo in Sosha's post above.

Re: Speedo problem - weird one.
If it is a new speedo drive, make sure the tabs fit in the slots perfectly, or you'll chew them out. Like Easyfit did to my K3 when they did a front tyre change. Go to pick up bike, first question, 'did your speedo work when you brought it in?'. People, avoid Easyfit in Weston-super-Mare.
