Default Re: How long to strip/rebuild calipers?

The shims were bent somehow I have straightened and given a good clean. See if that helps.

If it's just the one caliper that's making the noise make sure that when you do bend the shim it's the same as the other side. On my caliper the shim was too straight and wasn't contacting the brake pads enough which allowed them to move about a little.

Good morning all.

Caliper pistons are very easily scratched. Here's a tip that may be of use; After unbolting the calipers, & removing the pads, pump the pistons out on the bike on both calipers, using a block or bar of some sort, across both pistons to stop them coming out too far. An assistant helps when doing this.
You may also need to top up the fluid a touch. In order to get both caliper's pistons pretty far out.

Wrap a strip of 'Gaffa' tape around each piston near the tip, & then put a Jubilee type clip around the piston, on top of the tape. Using a pair of grips on the Jubilee clip, GENTLY, try to rotate the piston. If you can get it to rotate, draw it out. Be careful that the clip doesn't turn on the piston, the tape will only protect it so far.

Heating the caliper can help here. Careful use of a blowlamp, can be used. Alternatively, stand the caliper, pistons uppermost in a shallow bowl of hot water for a few minutes.

Cheers.
