Default Tyre change

Well, despite the sodding rain, I'm going to have to go out and change the tyres on the SV. I need the bike on Wednesday and the rear tyre in particular is past it's best! Thankfully there is a large overhang on the front of my bungalow, which is where the SV lives most of the time. It's nice and dry and just big enough to allow me to work on the bike out of the rain.

Wish me luck, I'm going in!

In changing the rear tire, I found it helped greatly to move the caliper out of the way. Then you only need three hands to put the wheel and spacers back in.

Front and rear tyres changed. Just about kept dry despite the rain. Thank goodness for the overhang on the front of the bungalow. Got finished just as the light was going.

Now I need some dry weather to scrub the tyres in. I'll be interested to see how these Angel GT tyres compare with the STs I had on before.

To be honest George, I don't find it too difficult removing and replacing the rear wheel. I've got the knack of it now after having been changing my own tyres for a number of years.

Not being a fan of men (or women) playing with balls, I didn't know it was an important day in the sporting calendar I'm afraid RT.

I haven't changed tyres myself since my first SV. That was my first bike with radial tyres and I struggled to break the bead.

Bead breaking and balancing are the two reasons I haven't bothered changing tyres myself in the past. (I've also been fortunate to have generally lived reasonably close to decent tyre fitting garages.)

However, now that well-stocked bike tyre fitters seem to be much less common for the sort of tyres I use, and amost seem affronted that I'd bring loose wheels rather than pay their exhorbitant charges for ride in-ride out service, I'm seriously reconsidering (including investing in some kit)

I have one of these for the bead.

These days as far as balancing goes I don't! Tyres are much more accurately made now and as long as the red dot goes by the valve you shouldn't have a problem. What needs balancing is the wheel, and once that's done it won't need doing again.
I'm sure someone will have a different opinion on this but my view is formed from 8 or 9 years of changing my own tyres.

A bead breaker, a tub of tyre soap, rim protectors, and a selection of decent quality tyre levers is all you need, along with the determination to learn how to do the job.
