Default Disposing of old petrol?

As the title says.
How can you get rid?

Store it in a suitable container and use it as a cleaning solvent.

How much? If it's a bit like half a 5L jerry can for the mower, I just dump it in the wife's car and let it mix with lots of the good stuff. You could stick it in your bike and do the same, unless it's really hanging. Failing all that take it to the council tip, they should have provision for solvents and other things you wouldn't chuck in your bin.

Round Northampton we have special teams that deal with it.
They seem to have two jobs in one though which is slightly weird as they get rid of the petrol and also burn dumped cars at the same time...

I would take it to the local tip if it's of no use (or are they all called recycling centres now?)

But am I wrong in thinking (assuming you don't want to burn it) that if you left the lid off in the garden it would just evaporate? Unlike diesel, lubricating oils etc.

I'm not saying that's what I'd recommend, just curious as it evaporates quickly if you spill it on your hands etc.
