Default since when did £650 excess become the norm?

Just shopping for bike insurance (online at the mo) all the sites have a compulsory excess of :£650. It may be a 'young persons' excess, but anyone else noticed it?Is this how they're trying to disguise/hinder raising premiums?
Most annoyingly I thought "fair enough I won't be claiming then" and put the total excess up to £1650... no change in premium!
The premiums are actually pretty cheap so not really grumbling ... but the choice would be nice

Not yet
Not really grumbling as combined with the premium it suits me and the sv, would just be a pain on the car or another bike though

Mine was £650 and now it's £500. On every policy I've had there has been the option of "excess insurance" which I've always taken.

Basically you pay £X for the policy and then it covers the first £Y of your excess should you claim.

I'm 24, got my insurance via Comparethemarket from a company called Grove and Dean, was £250 for insurance on the SV with £350 excess, I have 5 years no claims tho and my bike is garaged, dunno if that has made a difference as it says if my bike is stolen from my home while not garaged my excess is £650.
