Default Home spraying

So, I've got the panels, and most of them are filled and patched up, so I need to actually get the details sorted- like how to do it, what sort of paint to use etc. My brother has a wee compressor which is up to the task, and I can nab a spray gun off a mate, so the hardware's sorted... And the spare panels are mostly flatted back to a nice matt finish, no clear coat left.

I'll be doing it in british racing green, or some generic equivalent, with stripes the length of the bike in light silver (same colour as the frame, need to find a good match) What should I use to mask the stripe detailing? I'm told that ordinary maskigntape bleeds too much when used with spray guns...

And to get to the point, what sort of paint do I want? And can anyone recommend aplace to get it?

Cheers!

I could probably tell you more about paint then you would ever want to hear (or read).... feel free to ask more specific questions.

For masking I use the sheets of plastic with adhesive on one side that artists use for air brushing. Look in the phone book (or whatever you UK people call them ) and call a auto-body supplier, they will sell you some decent masking tape. I've also heard good things about butchers paper and rubber cement. After you glue down the butchers paper you "roll" off the excess rubber cement with your finger.

For paint I would use acrylic eurothane as it will not disolve or soften when you spill gas on it. Stay away from metallics for your first job because the metal bits like to run together if you're not super careful. PPG is an excellent brand. You'll need paint, reducer, hardener and for the plastic parts also use a flex agent. Should cost you about ~$120 USD for a pint of paint with the other stuff. 1 pint will just do a naked, you might want to get a quart... A bottle of DX330 wax & grease remover is a good final cleaner, be sure to use a good non-linting cloth.

I'll assume you already know how to do the prep stuff

striping effects get a product called "fine line tape " beleive it or not it comes in various forms about 4 or 5 mmm is enough to fold around contours then tape your masking tape off of this

get your paint from any Paint refinishers standox <spies hecker < glazarit are all good quality kit at reasonble money

brooklands green is a ford variant to rover racing green

and bostrugen green is bmw`s version of it all pearls of course but for the rover

id reccomend a two pack base coat and two pack laquer with a face mask ( if painting in a small area beware of the noxious fumes )

trust me they are toxic if you feel nautious and start sweating (your 2mins away from death) get out for 20 mins - been there done that

your panels should be real smooth to the touch and if you can feel any imperfections YOU will see them when its painted

but you need to feel it like you would a new women not an old one

mail me if you want any more info chap like cloggsy says im shirking of late

Aye, I've been testing the filler finish with my eyes closed, I knew that one from my teenage days of miniature gaming

Good point, these chemicals are very dangerous. Here in the USA it's difficult to get them and very difficut to find info on using them. I'm told many paints contain isocyanates (cyanide)...

I used a good bumble bee mask and did my panels 1 @ a time. Couldn't smell anything through the mask, but I must admit I didn't hang about in the booth. Thought about air supply, but the guys at the spray shop, who were spraying, said to me, If your doing it everyday for life then you do need an airsupply, but 1 off's, just a good mask and a pint of milk.
