Default DVD Burning

Why are DVDs so bloody hard to burn?
I've just wasted 4 dual layer ones (at around £1 each)
they are recognised as 8gb CD-r first, then it starts 'writing' for about a second before saying it's the wrong type of media.
When i try the second time it is recognised as a dvd and writes 100% (about 45 mins) before returning another error
So irritating!
Anyone want a coaster?!

Loads of websites say try different media but if it says it should work -correct me if i'm wrong- but I would expect it to bloody work!
