Default tacho not returning

hi I wonder if anyone has had this problem before? when I turn the ignition off my tacho stops at1 instead of 0. the bike is a 99 curvey and it has only just started doing this after I lost the front and dropped it. no other damage apart from bent right h/light bracket scratched headlight rim broken back brake lever and scratched exhaust and front brake lever. the bike took a few goes before starting. but ran fine and I couldn't see any oil or coolant leaks. when I switch ignition back on it resets to 0. do the curveys use the tacho for fault codes?

thanks

Dave

Chances are, it's the air core gauge. I've dropped mine twice over the years, and in both cases it broke. The whole dial is mounted to the little plastic bits in the ACG, and either the coil gets broken or (more likely in your case) the little plastic mounts break or twist restricting the movement.

If you take the whole unit out, you can take the dial off the front and unscrew the ACG from the back to take a look. The winding is incredibly delicate, so any attempt to fix broken plastic bits needs to be very careful.

I'm guessing it's terminal, though and the only fix is a new one. You could try looking for one where someone has fried the electronics (I tried and failed) or look for a complete replacement.

Instructions (with photos) for taking it apart are here, although you'll need to remove the circuit board (just screws at the back) in order to get the ACG off the board.

Good luck!

Here's a photo of mine (with dial removed):

You can see the ACG on the board to the left, with the copper coil and the white mounts which are twisted, breaking the windings which route through them.

Thanks for that,I have got a spare tacho so I will have a look at that and compare them. Hopefully the spare one isn't knackered as I can't remember what was wrong with it.

This just popped up on one of my saved searches and may interest you - currently at a reasonable bid price.

When I repaired my Tacho on my 1999 Curvy last year I had to fiddle around a lot setting the needle with the engine running on and off until I got it to sit right :/

I found using a Kitchen Fork made it easier to carefully lift the needle off and then placing back on.

HTH

PS

Whilst we are here is the Extra small bulb in the Tacho a,"Rev Limit" warning bulb?

Quite excellent advice about the kitchen fork - that sort of thing makes this forum first class.
