Default AL7 / AL8 servicing

I'm looking at an AL7 / AL8 to replace my sadly written-off K6S.

In terms of access to the air filter, rear cylinder spark plugs etc, does the fuel tank lift and hinge backwards in the same way as it does on pointies? Or is the procedure different?

Sorry for the basic question, I couldn't find any copies of the AL7/8 manuals or how-to pics / videos online.

Thanks!

Mine is still under warranty (just) so the dealer is still servicing it. The service manual is no longer available in the UK - the dealers have had to switch to DVDs and on-line manuals but you can still buy a hard copy manual from the US. (part # 99500-36240-03E)

I just dug out my service manual. The frame covers have to be removed (1 screw and 1 clip, then cover slides fwds), then tank lifts as per usual (2 screws). Air filter under tank 7 screws.

Plugs are special (= expensive), my dealer and my manual says change every 7500 miles, YMMV.

Thanks! That's good to know.

I was also looking at 2012 - 16 DL650s (for a bit of a change) but actually got a bit put off, because getting at the plugs / air filter basically means removing the tank side covers and the entire front fairing from the bike, and then removing (not lifting) the fuel tank. I know it's not a job you'd need to do very often but it seems excessive.

Yes, the prices of the special MR8e plugs for the AL7 onward are a bit steep, aren't they? And it seems there's no alternative projector-nose plug. Based on my old K6 though, even bog-standard plugs should last a lot longer than the factory scheduled change of 7,500 miles. I swapped to Iridiums after about 7K miles on the standard plugs, and the gap was still within spec with no visible deterioration.
