Default Total loss electrical system - Can I fit a brake light?

I have a track prepared TZR250 that has been stripped of its charging system so I have to recharge the battery with an optimate charger. I want to put a brake light on it so that it is road legal. Will that work?

I'm prosuming this will mean no reg/ rec, in which case a bike feed would blow bulbs, however a direct battery feed would work but obviously run the battery down that much faster.

Cheers Mark.

Yes, you can fit a brake light to a total loss system, it will of course mean more electrical load and thus a charge of the battery will last a lesser period, but it's certainly possible - a bit of careful testing will tell you how long you can run your bike before the battery dies - the ignition system is a relatively light load, but the brake light, (depending on how much you brake of course), could well be a near equal load.

If an SV650 has a flat tyre in the forest and no-one is there to blow it up, how long will it be 'til someone posts that the reg/rec is duff and the world will end unless a CBR unit is fitted? A little bit of knowledge = a dangerous thing.

don't need a brake light for it to be road legal, submit it to an MOT station with no lights whatsoever and the certificate will be issued with an advisory against riding at night or in conditions of reduced visibility, so don't get caught out by the fuzz if it's dusk or heavy rainclouds...

that said though riding with no brake light is pretty hardcore, and i wouldn't trust the majority of blind drivers to notice you

my KTM is a track bike with no DC system at all, or any battery, i'm planning on using a bigger stator with a reg/rec and running a capacitor instead of a battery, the lights will only work when the engine is running but it'll keep the weight to a minimum. you'll get more battery life from your total loss system if you fit an LED brake light, or LED bulbs in the original housing

So I'll basically just connect it directly to the battery

pretty much, might want to include a switch so it comes on when you brake and goes off again when you don't
