Reccommend me...
A chain rivet tool.
I know there are serious bits of kit out there which also cost serious amounts of money. I also know there are some out there which are cheap as chips but would probably last not long and brake. I'm thinking of spending around 50-60 pounds plus postage. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Recommend me...
I bought a Whale chain rivetting tool from B & C - cant find a piccy on their website, but its the same as this (without the splitting tool):
http://www.bikebitzuk.co.uk/index.ph...oducts_id=1000 To be honest, I found it hard work, but everyone I spoke to says it is one of the best for the job (so its prob just me!!) The hardest bit was peening the edges of the new link at 90 degree angles - first one I did I hammered it all the way around - so that what hacksawed off, then started again. The second one I realised that the sideplates were on too tight, and resulted in an O ring going walkabout after a short test ride - so that one was hacksawed off too! Third go was really careful, and measured the clearance of the sideplates with a pair of verniers, and made sure that they were the same as other links, and fingers crossed its still ok. I think its one of those things that the more times you do it, the easier it is - still a pain tho, especially trying to hammer the link on a wobbling chain - try to take all the slack out with the adjusters to make the chain nice and tight to make it easier. I know Squirrel hunter had a different one (motrax I think) which splayed the ends of the rivet as you tightened it against the rivet using a spanner - but from memory I sont think he had much luck - although you might want to pm him for details. Hope that helps. BB |

Re: Recommend me...
I asked this one a while back, most people recommended the Whale one or the DID one, if memory serves. I never bought one in the end

Re: Recommend me...
There are two types of link and thus two types of tool.
Some replacement chains come with a link that has pins which have recessed ends and requires a tool like this one: http://www.mandp.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=500600 The other variety has plain ended pins which needs a type of tool, (and a big hammer!), like this: http://www.mandp.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?catRef=557186 Which do you need?
