Default Dash lights on battery dying

On a normal ride today and the oil light and fuel light both come on at the same time on my 2001 SV650. Pulled over and checked oil and fuel and both were fine so I kept riding and figured I would look into it when I got home. About 15 minutes later one cylinder quit and the bike died. Battery was almost dead so I figure when the lights came on the battery was no longer charging.

Took off the seat and the wiring harness (two wires, one black one red) going to the rectifier/regulator was melted. Bypassed the harness with no change.

Any ideas/things to check before I start throwing parts at it? Thanks.

Carefully inspect the wiring loom as it passes under the tank hinge.

It is known to wear through to bare wires and short out, giving symptoms you describe.

The rectifier may have failed and over heated , the black and red being the 12v output.

Sounds like a short as andy says, would be odd for both lights to come on at once. That could have burnt out the regulator/rectifier. You can check the alternator windings are still good, easiest simple check is disconnect the connector and there should be no continuity between any of the three wires and earth, but they should all have continuity between any three pairs.

Did troubleshooting today. Took off the stator cover and no burnt coils or broken magnets. No continuity between the three yellow wires leaving going to the regulator. Close check on ohms between pairs around 0.06. Ordered a new regulator for starters.

The other problem besides the oil light and fuel coming on is that the front cylinder no longer works. Pulled the plug and still have spark so tomorrow I am going to try adding some fuel to the intake to see if I can get it to fire.

Thanks for all your help.
