This is an excellent point, another one to watch is, "where is the bike kept at home" if you state "garage" and it gets nicked from the drive you could be on a sticky wicket. Insurance companies, be afraid, be very afraid.

Geoff.
Often they state that they will double the excess in these scenarios. Which, although still a penalty, is a lot better than no payout at all.

Looking to buy a decent padlock which will hold both ends of the chain.

All recommendations and thoughts appreciated.

Thank you.
just to get back on topic...

I have had very good experience of CISA padlocks (with Diamond Hard Chains) which resisted several persistent attempts by pickeys to break. The attacks included freezing with nitrogen, various hammering attacks, bolt croppers and a Stihl saw. Eventually they managed to break the gate and post to gain access to the field.... They lobbed the chain and lock (still locked) in the river!

It's what I have nowadays as they proved their worth. E.g.

The problem is you can stick the fort knox of padlocks on it but at the end of the day it's still just an Oxford chain.

I had one of those CISA padlocks on my bike chain. It fell apart after about 10 years. Oddly enough, it did so the day after I'd ordered a new Almax chain and Squire padlock.

Take a look at the Almax link above. Impressive.

Anything where the 'bolt' is the least exposed it can be - like the one Luckypants linked too. I've heard squire are also very good (and also heard good things about CISA) . I would also google and youtube search "how to break xxxxx" "how to pick/crack/open xxxxxx" on your chosen model before purchase, if there are lots of (any?!) results I'd rethink.

My mate locked his bike in my shed last month and accidentally locked me out, he was stunned it took about 10 seconds to get in. (and obviously I pretended it had been nicked)

The almax and pragmasis chains are impressive pieces of kit and I'd agree with spending half decent money on a padlock to go with one of them.
