Angry Water Pump Cover Removal

Hi Guys,
So, I thought I would start my winter jobs with a simple one - removing my curvy's water pump cover for refinishing.
Haynes Manual read (useless), coolant drained, hoses disconnected, three screws out and a little tap on the hose stub and it starts to come off but the backplate is stuck to it and there is something stopping the backplate from coming off the crankcase with the outer cover. At this point as there are no flats on either casting to tap against, I thought it best to stop and ask the collective.
Any advice greatly appreciated thanks.

you have to remove the whole clutch cover then disconnect the drive gear inside. its the drive gear thats stopping the pump from coming off.

Thanks R1ffR4ff.

Bibio: I dont want to remove the inner cover and water pump, I only want to remove and refinish the outer cover - is it still necessary to remove the clutch cover to just do that?

Thanks.

yes you have to remove the whole clutch cover to remove the water pump (cover). the water pump has a shaft that runs through a bearing and inside the clutch cover that connects to a drive gear. to remove the water pump (cover) you must remove the drive gear inside the clutch cover.

word of warning about curvy clutch covers, they warp very easily. to lessen the chance of it warping you must star loosen and tighten the bolts.
