How much should be paid?
Great, my teenage son has managed to get himself a real apprentiship in electronic and mechanical engineering and that takes a massive weight of my shoulders. The only problem now is how much should I ask him to pay for his board?I am trying to get apoint of view from people who are the parents, and people who are paying board.Every body I have spoken to comes up with different amounts and its starting to feel like Im in a minefierld."Thats far to much" or"charge him double"
Im not trying to be mean but I think he needs to pay somthing. After stopages and transport he has about £600 a month fo himself. Any ideas? |

work out exactly what it costs for you to keep him, tell him, then ask him how much he thinks he should contribute to the upkeep of the house...

Re: How much should be paid?
I charged my son a third of his salary. If you did the same, he would still have £100 a week to himself.............that's more than I have to play with a week...............I'd love to have £100 left that was all mine
If you feel that's a bit high, maybe you could secretly put part of that away and keep it for him for any sudden big expenses, or a deposit on a property in the future.

I was an apprentice too, we earn far far too much lol! in 4 years he'll be coming out debt free and with a decent set of qualifications. 1/3 is what my olds wanted, however i struck up a deal and proved that i was paying into a 'fake mortgauge' so as to get my foot on the ladder. worked too. i still paid my olds £150 a month to help with food etc (that i was never there to eat lol) |

Re: How much should be paid?
With 600 left to himself a month i'd be sitting down with him and agreeing a minimum amount for him to put in an account every month for his future, then see whats left-somewhere in the region of 30 quid a week seems reasonable to me-it also depends on your circumstances,if you need him to contribute more i'm sure he will be aware of this.
good luck with this one-i gave my mum my first wage packet, she didn't want it but i felt proud to be able to contribute for the first time and its made me appreciate the value of a pound when i have to work for it. husky |

Re: How much should be paid?
A 3rd sounds good to me, I had to pay half of my wages when I was living at my parents and it didn't matter how much I was getting.

Re: How much should be paid?
£100 a week rent and food. Put 50% into a savings account for him that he gets back when he finishes studies (and moves out).
